Death at Fleming Manor: Episode 8 Walkthrough

All Death at Fleming Manor guides

Episode 8, The Human Cannonball, takes you to a circus where the star act died mid-show after landing on his head. You name the troupe, chase a poison that hides from the usual tests, match a fingerprint against 46 samples and finally work out who the clown really is.

Episode 8: The Human Cannonball Walkthrough

This is a long case. The first death certificate is only a starting point, and the inspector keeps asking for more as new evidence turns up.

Form 1: Names

  • Name the ringmaster, all four performers and the two show animals.
  • An acrobat called Colin with a pet monkey should ring a bell from Episode 6.
  • The backstage area is set up for four performers: a clown, an animal tamer, a female acrobat and a male acrobat.
  • The wage ledger gives all four performers’ surnames. Jenkins is not paid in cash, and Arthur gets 60 kilos of beef a week.
  • The lion taming poster never says which of the two is Arthur and which is Leo.

Form 2: Toxicology Testing

  • Blood is the only sample you can send.
  • The body shows one sign of poisoning: cyanosis. Request every poison that lists cyanosis as a symptom.

Form 3: Death Certificate

  • Avery is out of the office, so this goes like Episode 2: fill in what the current evidence supports, and harder questions follow later.
  • The cause of death is simply landing on his head. Why he landed wrong is a question for later.
  • He was born in 1927.
  • The inspection log can be trusted. The equipment was checked every Wednesday before the Friday show.
  • The show plan has six twenty-minute acts. He died during the human cannonball act, so the time of death does not fall neatly on a twenty-minute mark.

Form 4: BAC Request

  • You need his weight and the time of death, and you have already seen both.
  • Round the time of death up.

Form 5: Additional Toxicology Testing

  • Avery suspects a form of succinylcholine that breaks down in the body, so you need new evidence to test.
  • Send in the ball hidden inside the mattress, the victim’s shoes, the ringmaster’s cane, the blowpipe, the needle on the dartboard and a dart from the dartboard.
  • Send it off, leave the screen and then read the results.

The Inspector’s Questions

After the results, the inspector asks two questions.

  • What three things suggest murder? The puncture wound, the hidden poison, and the gap between what the witnesses said and what the tests show.
  • What is the single most necessary test? Fingerprints, so you know who handled what.
  • For the Contrarian2 achievement, pick all five wrong answers to the second question first (Nationalities, Marital Status, Blood Sample, Financial Balances and Paraffin Cast), then choose Fingerprints.

Form 6: Fingerprint Examination Report

  • You have one print and 46 samples to compare it with, so narrow the list down first. Who is the most suspicious?
  • The easiest method is a screenshot and an image editor. Rotate the tape to match, then compare the prints one by one.
  • Half the difficulty is that the tape is not at the same angle as the samples. It is slightly crooked.
  • Think about picking up a small ball. Which two fingers would you use? Thumb and index finger.
  • Stella and Leo both lied about the victim being drunk, so start with them.

Form 7: Updated Death Certificate

  • The instruments used to inject the drug include everything used to carry it as well as whatever delivered the injection. Look for the hidden items.
  • Remember that the blood test came back negative for everything.

Form 8: The Clown’s Identity

A new word appears on the circus floor:

  • Wanted Poster: Derek, Walker, Daisy, Brown, Rupert, Fleming
  • This one is straightforward. The list of names gives it away.
  • Most of it is careful reading.
  • Check the ring with the initials D.B.
