Case 10: The Triumph of Order

The extra scroll asks you to work out the merit deductions and how much each person lost, so have pen and paper ready.

Words:

Square

  • Man in the powdered wig and red shirt: Fashion
  • Second man with glasses: Lies, Lust, Art
  • Third man: Bones, Souls
  • The lawyer, Maker: Beauty, Diligence
  • Paper in front of the lawyer: Merit
  • Gorran, by the posters: Mistakes, Francs
  • Turner, upper platform left: Emotions, Music, Untidiness
  • Alistair, upper platform right: Secrets
  • Charge books on the upper platforms: Fangor, Quinn, Walter, Keene, Lothar, Richards, Years, Josh, Bailey, Horace, Webb, Gideon, Bell
  • Lazarus: Idol
  • First student: Truth, Moderation
  • Second student: Sloth
  • Third student: Indulgence, Literature

Hints:

  • You start with the plus and minus signs and the numbers 0 to 9 in your word bank.
  • Each type of virtue costs a fixed number of points when broken. Four merit books show the totals, so you can treat them as equations.
  • Two of those books involve only one type of violation each. Solve those first, then use them to find the other two values.
  • Once you know all four values, add up the deductions in every charge book.
  • The idol’s runes should look familiar. Think about what this command does to a person’s years.
