Chapter 3 is the werewolf round. A body with a burned head turns up in the Art Studio, Silas is nowhere to be found, and one early choice can end the chapter before the trial even starts.

Chapter 3: Investigation and Trial Walkthrough

Investigation

Opening Questions

  • Why is it a problem that the Proxy won’t announce the werewolf’s kills? You can’t tell whether the werewolf killed them or not.
  • Use the Seer power now or later? No effect; Lyle insists on using it.
  • Let Fayse take the lead? No effect; Lyle lets her either way.

Lounge

Talk to everyone on every topic. Three topics are questions:

  • Silas, third topic: the Hierarch isn’t afraid of being killed because their death wouldn’t stop the selection.
  • Fayse, second topic: the participant most likely to be her father is Silas, the only one old enough.
  • Hyper, first topic: the only way the Hierarch could die in an earlier round and still be alive is faking their death.

Outside the Hierarch’s Room

Check any door and the Proxy.

Hierarch’s Room

Check Lena, Dada, the Hanging Clothes Replicas, Fayse, the Bust behind her, the Sea Angel Crown (angle the camera up), the Believer and the Proxy.

  • Investigate or not? No effect; Lyle vetoes it.
  • Why can’t Fayse sleep? Because she’s about to die.
  • Can Dada fit through a window smaller than her body? No.
  • Why did Alice suddenly shrink? Pathosync.
  • Could a Pathosync-warped knife cut flesh 30 cm away? No.
  • Could it if the knife was thrust at them? Yes.

You’re asked to pick the Art Room or the Archive. You’ll visit both, so the order doesn’t matter.

Art Room

Check the Door, the Believer, the art on the back wall, the Sea Angel Lantern, the Suspended Paintings, the Saw Handle and the Plaster Barrels.

  • Back wall art: Fayse feels dizzy because there are faces everywhere in this room.
  • The Hierarch’s self-portraits all look different because the Hierarch can change their appearance.

Archive

Check the Door, the Believer, the Terminal, Fayse, the ???/X Locker, Kizuna’s Locker and Lena. After both rooms are done, several scenes play.

Art Studio (Second Visit)

Check Lena, Alice, Hyper, Eirys, the back wall paintings, the Suspended Paintings, the Body, the Bloody Statue Gouges, the Burnt Plaster Bucket, the Syringe on the central floor, the Proxy and Fayse.

  • Hyper: if Silas is dead, the killer could be everyone but Eirys.
  • Back wall paintings: the person who would feel sick from portraits is Fayse.
  • The Body: the head was burned to make the victim unidentifiable.
  • Alice says the killer got the blade close, turned it off and used the remote for the rest. The problem: the cutting machine resets to its default position every time it’s turned off.
  • Where could Silas have hidden in the Art Studio? Hung upside down on the statue.
  • Whose ability is Face Erasure? Fayse’s.

Bad End Choice: Call a Trial Now or Delay

Calling the trial now gives the bad end The Paradox Endures, which is an achievement. Delay to keep investigating. The rules say the werewolf wins instantly if a trial is called before a death, so check the Archive first.

Archive (Second Visit)

Only the Terminal is required. Raze’s and Cotari’s lockers have some backstory if you want it.

  • What role is Silas NOT? Werewolf. There’s one per round, and Fayse is it.
  • Should Fayse be confined? No effect; she vetoes it.

Archive (Third Visit)

Check the three broken lockers and the Memory Chip.

Hierarch’s Room (Second Visit)

Check the doors (the hotspot is on the left), the center of the portrait wall, Eirys and the Proxy.

  • The most likely identity of the charred corpse is… Silas.
  • Bad end choice, do you let Fayse leave? Yes. No is a game over.
  • What triggers the Hierarch’s room death trap? Someone dying inside.

Art Room (Third Visit)

Check the Charred Head, the Broken Skylight, the Sea Angel Marking, the Body, the Fragments in front of the statue, the Breathing Apparatus and Fayse.

Silas’ Bedroom

Check the Letter and the Memory Chip.

Trial

  • Who is this round’s victim? Silas, the only person not present.

Refutation vs. Hyper: Killing the Werewolf

Statement 3, “and he set out to kill the Werewolf.” Present Seer. The Seer is banned from killing the Werewolf.

Refutation vs. Everyone: The Art Studio

Statement 6, Hyper: “Silas dragged everyone into the art studio.” Present Eirys’ Testimony. She wasn’t there.

Refutation vs. Hyper: The Machine

Statement 8, “saw Fayse using the machine.” Present Fayse’s Testimony. You did see her do it, but she says the Phantom Hand Pathosync forced her.

  • Present in scene, where was Silas hiding? The Hanging Body. It is possible for him to be the hanging body and survive, which the next question covers.
  • What proves the Art Studio victim isn’t Silas? Cause of Death. The Proxy said the participant victim burned to death.

Refutation vs. Hyper: Face Erasure

Statement 9, “We couldn’t tell it was burned beyond recognition due to Face Erasure.” Present Face Erasure. Fayse’s ability only works on things recognized as faces, and a head burned beyond recognition wouldn’t count.

  • What part of the Art Studio case couldn’t Silas have done? Face Erasure. He had no way to make Fayse use it.

Refutation vs. Everyone: We All Saw It

Statement 7, Fayse: “We all clearly saw.” Present Lena’s Testimony. Lena remembers Face Erasure being active, so nobody can say for sure Fayse was there; it could have been someone in her outfit.

  • If Fayse was in the Hierarch’s room, who was the Art Studio Fayse? A believer dressed in Fayse’s clothes.
  • Why does Fayse remember the murder if she wasn’t there for what you saw? The same murder happened several times. With Face Erasure, actors can stand in for everyone but one person and act it out again.
  • Point out in scene, the three inconsistencies: Alice, Elian and Hyper. None of them remember the murder, yet you remember them standing there.

Refutation vs. Dada: Three Decapitations

Statement 1, “There’s no evidence of three decapitations.” Present Three Gouges. The saw cut a line by the decapitation point three times, one per reenactment.

Refutation vs. Everyone: Entering the Room

Statement 3, Alice: “he wouldn’t have to enter the room in the first place.” Present Other’s Hand. It only works by line of sight, so he had to be inside.

Refutation vs. Dada: The View from Above

Statement 2, “Anyone could see down from the Hierarch’s room.” Present Art Studio Location (1/4). The floating island sits right above the statue and blocks the view of the cutting.

  • Point out in scene, where was Silas hiding? Behind Elian, in the mass of Face Erasure static.
  • What proves the portraits were used for this effect? Paintings on the floor.

Refutation vs. Hyper: Who Could Have Done It

Statement 9, “Anyone other than Eirys or Fayse could have done it.” Present Fayse’s Testimony. She says Other’s Hand affected her, so Silas had to be involved.

  • Who is the other Silas? Silas’ Left Hand, the one that always makes the best move.
  • Choose person, Silas’ accomplice who could impersonate the Proxy: Alice, the perfect shapeshifter. It also explains why he had her Memory Chip.
  • What proves one participant can shapeshift? Raze. Someone would have had to copy her perfectly. This answer isn’t fully confirmed yet.
  • What proves Alice is Silas’ accomplice? The Archive Room Explosion. Alice was on guard duty when it happened.

Refutation vs. Hyper: The Bomb

Statement 1, “The death trap was probably a bomb.” Present Gas Canister. He’s close; the flame was just smaller and more localized.

  • Present in scene, what proves Silas was NOT burned beyond recognition in the Hierarch’s Room? The central circle of portraits. It’s a wall of paper and would have caught fire.
  • If Alice didn’t help and he had to be moved in after being burned, what follows? Someone killed Silas.

Refutation: When Everyone Was in the Room

Statement 2, Dada: “When everyone was in the room.” Present Fayse’s Discomfort. She stepped outside with Alice.

Refutation: After the Door Opened

Statement 4, Hyper: “After the door opened.” Present The Closed Door. You locked the Art Studio door.

  • Present in scene, what makes it impossible for Fayse to carry the body to the center of the Hierarch’s Room? The Wall of Portraits. She can barely stand in there.
  • What was Silas trying to find out through the decapitation incident? Who the Werewolf is. He suspected Fayse, and pulling you in would confirm it.
  • Present person, identify the Werewolf: Fayse.
  • What would Silas do to save Fayse? Make her kill someone without knowing it. If she won’t kill and not killing means death, it’s the only way she survives the round.

Refutation vs. Lena

Statement 14, “How could someone burn to death in a room full of water?” Present Special Plaster. It generates extreme heat in water.

  • Select person, who killed Silas? Fayse. She cut open the skylight and flooded the room, which set off the plaster.
  • Who put the breathing apparatus on Fayse? Silas, the only other person in the room.
  • Why did missing the Werewolf preparation barely matter to Silas? He had Other’s Hand and could already control people.

Refutation vs. Alice (1)

Statement 9, “How could he have known when to activate the trap?” Present Wires. When Fayse and Alice left, the wires on their doors pulled tight, so he only had to look up.

  • What did Silas do before hiding? Disfigured himself completely. Fayse’s ability doesn’t work on burnt faces, so she wouldn’t notice the change.

Truth Reconstruction

  • II, where does Fayse wait for the Hierarch? Fayse alone in the Hierarch’s room above the Art Studio.
  • III, what truth did Silas reveal to stun everyone? That he was the Hierarch (the picture of him choking everyone).
  • VI, what did Silas use to conceal himself? Silas covered in portraits.
  • VII, what did Lyle see when he opened his eyes? The staged decapitation, before being tranquilized.
  • X, when suspicion fell on Fayse, what did Lyle do? Locked her in the Art Studio (her at the console, then alone behind the door).
  • XII, who did Silas strike a deal with? Alice.
  • XIV, what did Silas do to his own face? Burned it off.
  • XVI, who felt ill from the paintings? Fayse surrounded by portraits, with Alice.
  • XVIII, what burned Silas alive? The flood setting off the plaster powder.
  • XIX, what did Silas do for Fayse in his final moments? Put the breathing apparatus on her.

Refutation vs. Alice (2)

Statement 8, “How could anyone time that perfectly?” Present Other’s Hand. His left hand moves on its own and does exactly what he wants. Finishing the chapter unlocks Face Erasure.
