Chapter 4 takes place in the Temple of Time, where a train seems to carry everyone between three Goddess statues: past, present and future. Two bad end achievements are hidden in the investigation, and the trial turns the whole time-travel setup on its head.

Chapter 4: Investigation and Trial Walkthrough

Investigation

Goddess of the Present Statue

Check the Screen, the Second Floor Balcony (angle the camera up), the Golden Clockface, the locked-up Sea Angel, the Exit Door and the Weapon Dispenser.

Goddess of the Past Statue

Talk to everyone: Alice, Hyper, Eirys, Dada, Eliana and Lena. Lena’s second topic is a question: the best explanation is a Believer given Lena’s appearance and memories from the past.

  • Why isn’t the Hierarch in this group? The Hierarch isn’t among the surviving Divine Seeds.
  • Whose past self is effectively a different person? Elian.

Bad End Choice: Kill the Past Eirys and Lena?

Kill Them gives the bad end The Death of the Beloved, which is an achievement. Wait and See keeps the chapter going.

  • Everyone had the same dream. What can you conclude? The price of using the Time Voyage is having the user’s past exposed.
  • Whose Pathosync is related to memory? Hyper.

Goddess of the Future

Check the Logic Church Emblem at the top, the Proxy, the Exit and the Armory.

  • Why are there gaps in Lyle’s memory of the Director? The Director’s Pathosync caused them.
  • To rewrite the past, who needs to die? Hyper.
  • What do all the Divine Seeds have in common? They all have someone they need to protect.

Goddess of the Past (Second Visit)

Check the Spiky Plant, Hyper, Eirys, the Body (angle the camera up, then the Wall Cracks), Eliana, Lena and the Exit. The Wall Cracks are a question: the killer recreated a murder from Lyle’s past.

  • Who could have killed in the Goddess of the Past? The others inside the Goddess of the Past.
  • What role did the Joker choose? Werewolf.
  • Who could have killed Present Alice? Dada, the only one without an alibi.
  • How do you feel about Eirys? Either answer; Lyle can’t bring himself to say he likes her either way.

Bad End Choice: Stay and Fight or Run?

This comes up in the third orphanage flashback. Run gives the bad end The Death of Eirys, another achievement. Stay and fight to continue.

Goddess of the Past (Third Visit)

Check the Blade, the Bandaged Hand, the Pipe and the Blade Wounds.

  • Why couldn’t the Demon Beasts have killed both victims? Demon Beasts wouldn’t have pinned Dada up.
  • Why couldn’t another Divine Seed have killed them? You’ve been using the Time Voyage the whole time, which blocks the only way in.

Goddess of the Future (Second Visit)

Check the Body (Face, Blade, Bandaged Hand, Pipe and Bite Wounds), Elian, the Proxy, Alice’s AI Screen, the Exit and Hyper’s AI Screen.

  • Who is the Director’s daughter? Dada.
  • Why hasn’t the trial begun? The other Hero never agreed to it.

Trial

Refutation vs. Elian (1)

Statement 7, “He conspired with past Lyle.” Present Laws of the Temple of Time. Your past self isn’t there while your present self is.

  • Whose past did you see the first time Hyper and Lyle used the train? Hyper’s.

Refutation vs. Elian (2)

Don’t do anything. It ends once he’s done talking.

  • Whose Pathosync could create Demon Beasts? Dada. You never saw her use it, but a Pathosync makes other people act out your condition, so she could turn them into beasts.
  • Select person, who destroyed the orphanage? Dada. She was on the island, and the Hierarch begged her to stop the God from arriving.

Refutation vs. Everyone: No Proof

Statement 9, Lena: “We still have no proof.” Present Director and Demon Beasts. The beasts never attacked the Director, so Dada was influencing them.

  • What were the Demon Beasts originally? Humans. Dada’s power makes people believe they’re beasts and look like them.
  • Why couldn’t you find Dada or Alice when the Demon Beasts arrived? They had become Demon Beasts.

Refutation vs. Everyone: All Lying

Statement 5, Elian: “or they were all lying.” Present Nothing But the Truth. Lena’s power was active in all three statues.

Refutation vs. Everyone: No Way to Reach Them

Statement 3, Eirys: “There was no way to reach where they died.” Present The Clock. The clock hands move when the train moves, so someone could ride along.

  • Present in scene, what four things are wrong here? Click each of the four Demon Beasts. There are no Believers this round, so every beast has to be a participant, and the Future didn’t have that many people.
  • What do the four Demon Beasts prove? The people inside the Goddess of the Present had changed. Everyone except Lyle and Hyper was a beast.

Refutation vs. Everyone: We Would Have Noticed

Statement 14, Lena: “We would have noticed.” Present Price of the Time Voyage. When the train moves, everyone is pulled into a memory, so nobody sees the real world.

  • Why were the Demon Beasts created? To keep anyone from telling who had been transformed; they all look identical.
  • Where were Past Alice and Alice’s bodies observed from? Goddess of the Past / Goddess of the Present.
  • Where were Past Dada and Dada’s bodies observed from? Goddess of the Past / Goddess of the Future.

Refutation vs. Everyone: No Pathosync Could Do That

Statement 10, Lena: “No one’s Pathosync could have done that.” Present Warp of All Things. Alice can change how other people look as long as it isn’t too far from how they look now, so making someone a little younger or look like a twin is within her reach. She already makes everyone believe she’s Alice, so she can make them believe they’ve been transformed.

Refutation vs. Lena (1)

Statement 1, “No Pathosync can make us believe we’re our past self.” Present Total Recall. Hyper said his ability feels just like the train: it drops you into a vivid memory. Combined with Alice’s ability, it can convince someone they’re a certain age.

  • Select all three people who used their Pathosync to create the time travel illusion: Alice, Dada and Hyper. Remember Alice and Hyper talking at the start of the chapter about needing a third person.

Refutation vs. Everyone: You Confirmed It

Statement 6, Lena: “You confirmed it yourself Lyle.” Present Unreachable Height. You saw her from a distance and never checked. Everyone thought Cotari was dead too until Eirys checked her heartbeat.

  • Alice’s death was staged in such a complicated way to… make Alice look like a corpse. Her wounds looked bad enough that you’d assume she was dead.
  • Dada and Alice looked so similar in death because… they were the same person.
  • Who was made to look like whom? Dada was made to look like Alice, then turned back by the time the final body was found.
  • Present in scene, who is Alice? The Proxy. Alice pulled the same trick last round, and the Proxy said she wouldn’t be in the temple.

Refutation vs. Everyone: Pinned in Place

Statement 7, Lena: “She killed herself and pinned herself in place.” Present Black Needles. They went through both hands, so she couldn’t have done it herself.

Refutation vs. Everyone: Bitten to Death

Statement 5, Lena: “He was bitten to death by Demon Beasts.” Present Blade Wounds. He was cut, not bitten.

  • Point out in scene, what proves no one could have framed you? The Clean Blade. The only other knife that could make those wounds wasn’t used.

Refutation vs. Everyone: Remembering It

Statement 7, Lena: “to have to remember something like that.” Present Demon Beast. Elian argues he ate the body as a Demon Beast, but Demon Beasts don’t remember what they did once they turn back into humans.

Truth Reconstruction

  • II, which two people’s wishes created the Temple of Time? Lyle and Hyper drawing the Werewolf card. Lyle asked the Proxy for a closed-room scenario, and Hyper asked for a place to identify the Hierarch.
  • IV, whose Pathosyncs made the illusion of the past? Hyper and Alice using their powers.
  • V, who climbed the high wall while everyone went to the future? Dada carrying Alice up the clock.
  • VII, who from the future said someone died? The Alice AI.
  • X, what attacked Lyle? Lyle stabbing the Hyper Demon Beast.

After the Reconstruction

  • Why did Hyper and Alice set things up this way? Solving this mystery would also reveal the truth of what happened in the past.
  • Why is present Lena alive when past Lena is dead? The Lena in the present isn’t the real Lena.
  • Refutation vs. Lena (2): there’s no contradiction. Let it play out.
  • Flashback choice, Lena or Lesa: pick either. It isn’t known yet whether it changes anything.

Finishing the chapter unlocks Total Recall.
