In Horses of Hoofprint Bay, each horse’s personality traits are kept in the save file as plain numbers. Change one, and you can remove a bad trait before it passes down to the foals. You can also use it to see quirks your horse has that you haven’t discovered yet.
All you need is File Explorer and a text editor like Notepad. The numbers in the save are one lower than each trait’s place in the in-game book, so the full list is included below.
Before You Change Horse Personality Traits
- Any edit to a save file turns off achievements and statistics for that save. If you still want achievements on it, leave it alone.
- This method changes the personalities a horse already has. It does not add new quirks. The source suggests one way that might work, though it wasn’t tried: copy the personality entry from a horse with two or more traits, paste it onto another horse, and adjust it.
- Back up your save file before you start.
Finding Your Save File
- Type
%appdata%into the search bar on your taskbar and open it. - This drops you in the Roaming folder, which is the wrong one. Click AppData in the file path bar to go back one level.
- Open LocalLow and scroll down to ThogliStudios.
- Go to Horses of Hoofprint Bay > Saves~ > Games, then open the folder of the save you want to edit.
Without the taskbar: AppData is a hidden folder. In File Explorer, hover over View, then Show, and tick Hidden items. Then follow this path:
C:\Users\(your user)\AppData\LocalLow\ThogliStudios\Horses of Hoofprint Bay\Saves~\Games\(save file name)Editing the Save File
The folder holds several JSON files named “save” followed by a number. Those are backups of earlier in-game days. The one that matters is the first file, called just save with no number. It’s the only one that changes your game.
- Open save in a text editor such as Notepad.
- Press Ctrl + F, type the name of the horse you want to change, and press Enter. This jumps straight to that horse’s stats.
- Skip past most of the stats until you reach the personalities part. It looks like this:
"notifyLooksLikeMom": false,
"itchySpot": 3,
"scritchesAmountToday": 1,
"treatsAmountToday": 0,
"personalities": [
{
"type": 10,
"discovered": true,
"newlyDiscovered": false
}- Change the number next to “type” to the trait you want. Use the list below to pick it.
- Save the file, close it, and start the game. The horse now has the personality you set.
The save file holds many other values you could change too, but this guide sticks to personalities.
Personality Trait Numbers
The values follow the trait order in the in-game Traits and Quirks book, but they are shifted by one. Counting down the book and entering that number won’t work. Use one number lower instead. For example, Good Inheritance is the 10th trait in the book, so its value in the save is 9.
| Value | Trait | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Easy Keeper | Takes less food, gains 10 body condition/loses weight slower |
| 1 | Hard Keeper | Takes more food, loses 10 body condition/loses weight faster |
| 2 | Snacky | Gets more confidence from treats |
| 3 | Cuddly | Gets more confidence from scritches |
| 4 | Neat Freak | Starts with less dirt each day |
| 5 | Mud Lover | Starts with more dirt each day |
| 6 | Sure Footed | Less likely to get injured, only gets abrasions in the field |
| 7 | Injury Prone | More likely to get injured, can get more serious injuries in the field |
| 8 | Good Mom | Foals mothered by this mare have higher starting stats and confidence |
| 9 | Good Inheritance | Their foal is more likely to have better stats than its parents |
| 10 | Bad Inheritance | Their foal is more likely to have worse stats than its parents |
| 11 | Rebellious | May still try to change gait randomly even at max confidence |
| 12 | Energetic | May still try to speed up even at max confidence, requires more exercise |
| 13 | Chill | May still try to slow down even at max confidence, requires less exercise |
Your starter horse is always a mare with Sure Footed and Good Mom. That way she won’t break a leg right away in the field and can start breeding sooner.
Red Ribbon and Editing Money
Once you save your edits, the save gets a red ribbon on the file select screen. It shows that achievements and statistics are turned off for that file.
You can change your money the same way:
- Type money into the Find bar and click the down arrow twice, starting from the top. The line you need sits just below the name of your yard or stable.
- Enter any amount you like. Adding a couple of zeros to the end works.
- Save the file and start the game.
