Roguefort: Fishing Guide

Key tips

  • A better rod and a higher fishing skill are what let you land big fish.
  • Pick each reeling move by the phase the fish is in, not by feel. The cheat sheet under Reeling lands far more big fish than the in-game hints.
  • Spots really do get fished out. After a few catches, rare fish almost stop biting. Walk about 12 tiles away and the water is fresh again.
  • Legendary fish need the right biome, time, season, and distance from shore, so you need a boat. The Legendary Lure sold by the chandler makes them far more likely to bite.

All numbers come from the October 2026 version of the game. Updates may change them.

Fishing basics

Casting and waiting

  • You don’t have to equip a rod. Stand next to water and press F, and the game uses the best rod in your inventory.
  • Lures go in your off hand.
  • You can cast into any open water within your rod’s cast range (counted in tiles), as long as you can see the spot.
  • Press Wait (spacebar) to sit and wait. Press it a second time to keep waiting on its own until something bites. Moving away cancels fishing.
  • Auto-waiting stops when an enemy comes into view, you take damage, you open a menu, or your hunger or thirst falls to 25%.

Time to a bite

A bite takes 3 to 8 turns. Your rod’s and lure’s Bite Speed cut that down, and so do the bite speed bonuses under Bite conditions.

When a fish bites

  • Press Pull to start reeling. If you don’t, the fish gets away.
  • Very easy fish sometimes come in without a fight (“barely puts up a fight!”). The chance is 20% minus 1% for each point of difficulty, so only fish below difficulty 20 can do this.
  • Some bites aren’t fish at all. You may pull up an item, some gold, or nothing useful.

Fish value

A fish is worth its base value × (1 + 10% per pound), so a big fish is worth much more than a small one of the same kind. Most catches land near the small end of their species’ size range.

Reeling

How the fight works

  • There are two bars: Tension starts at 50 and Progress starts at 0.
  • Fill Progress to 100 to land the fish. If Tension drops to 0 (slack line) or reaches 100 (snapped line), the fish escapes.
  • You get 15 turns (16 at fishing level 5, 17 at level 10). If they run out, the fish escapes.
  • Each turn, choose Pull (Right), Hold (Down), or Slack (Left). The fish is always in one of five phases, shown above the bars, and the phase decides what your move does.

What each move does

Your move shifts tension first: Pull +7, Hold 0, Slack −7. The fish then moves tension on its own, and your move adds progress:

Fish phaseFish adds to tensionProgress: PullProgress: HoldProgress: Slack
Rests−1 to +11052
PULLS+3 to +7441
SURGE!+10 to +16210
DIVES−14 to −8731
Thrashing−4 to +4541

Harder fish push tension harder, up to about 50% more at the highest difficulties.

Any move that gains progress also gets a bonus of 0.4 × your rod’s Fishing Power + 0.25 × your lure’s Lure Power + 0.3 × your fishing level. This bonus is why gear and skill matter so much. A crude rod at level 0 adds about 2–3 per move. A masterwork rod at level 10 adds about 10.

Cheat sheet

  • Tension 80 or higher: Slack (Pull instead if the fish DIVES)
  • Rests: Pull
  • DIVES: Pull
  • PULLS: Hold (Pull if tension is 15 or lower)
  • Thrashing: Hold
  • SURGE!: Hold if tension is below 70, otherwise Slack

This mostly matches the in-game hints, with two changes. Slack at 80 instead of waiting for the “about to snap” warning at 90. And hold through surges unless tension is already high. Slacking during a surge gains nothing, and big fish leave no turns to waste.

How much it helps

Chance to land a typical legendary fish when you follow the cheat sheet:

Fishing levelCrudeBambooOakSteelMasterwork
Level 014%35%57%71%78%
Level 551%70%80%87%89%
Level 1087%90%91%93%94%
Level 1493%94%95%96%97%

Following the in-game hints lands about 10–15 percentage points fewer in the middle of this table. Your fishing level matters as much as your rod: a level 10 angler with a crude rod beats a level 0 angler with a masterwork rod.

Rods, lures and boats

Rods

RodFishing PowerCast RangeBite SpeedWhere to get it
Crude Rod3–520One-handed. Fishmonger, 12 gold
Bamboo Rod6–840–1Fishmonger (town tier 2+), 24–28 gold
Oak Rod8–1151–2Fishmonger in a tier 5 town, 52 gold
Steel Rod11–1471–3Not sold in shops
Masterwork Rod14–1882–4Not sold in shops

There are also two unique rods:

  • Angler’s Companion (oak): Fishing Power 15, Cast Range 7, Bite Speed +3. It can appear in areas of level 2 and up.
  • Tidecaller (masterwork): Fishing Power 22, Cast Range 10, Bite Speed +5, +2 vision. It can appear in areas of level 4 and up.

Every catch wears a rod down slightly.

Lures

LureLure PowerBite SpeedRarity BonusWhere to get it
Worm1–21–20Fishmonger, 5–6 gold
Fly1–32–30–1Fishmonger (tier 2+), 12–14 gold
Spinner2–40–11–2Fishmonger (tier 3+), 20–22 gold
Glowbait2–31–22–4Fishmonger in a tier 5 town, 46 gold
Legendary3–52–44–6Chandler in a tier 5 town, 110 gold (1 in stock)

Lures change what bites in two ways:

  • Matching lure: each fish has lures it likes (see the fish lists). Using one of them doubles that fish’s chance.
  • Rarity Bonus: this goes straight onto the chance of every Rare, Epic, and Legendary fish, and rarer fish get more of it (×1 for Rare, ×2 for Epic, ×3 for Legendary). A legendary fish starts with a chance of only 1, while common fish start at 10–12, so the Legendary Lure’s +12 to +18 is a huge boost.

Lure Power also adds to reeling progress (see Reeling).

Magic rods and lures

Rods and lures can roll these extra stats:

  • Angler’s: +2–4 Fishing Power (rod or lure)
  • Patient: +1–3 Bite Speed (rod or lure)
  • Precise: +1–3 Fishing Power (rod)
  • …of Still Waters: +2–3 Fishing Power and +1–2 Bite Speed (rod)
  • …of the Deep: +2–4 Rarity Bonus (rod or lure)

Boats

A boat adds 20 tiles per boat tier to your cast distance (see Fishing locations). For most rare fish, this is the only way to reach them.

Fishing locations

Water

  • Shallow and deep water are separate tile types. Reeds count as shallow.
  • Open sea: in the ocean biome, every ocean tile is open sea. Sea fish bite only there.

Biomes

The game groups its many biomes into six fishing biomes:

  • Plains: plains, savanna, coastal, taverns, and any biome not listed here
  • Forest: forest, taiga, jungle, glade
  • Wetland: wetland, Sunken Library
  • Rocky: rocky, mountain, snow peak, arctic, tundra, tower, Undermaw
  • Mineral: mineral, volcanic, desert, Sealed Halls, dragon lair, Deepheart
  • Ocean: the sea

Fish marked “Any biome” bite in every one of them.

Distance from shore

Many fish bite only far from land. Check the Min. dist. column in the fish lists.

  • From land: distance is measured from the tile you cast into to the shore. Your cast range keeps it to a few tiles.
  • From a boat: distance is measured from you to the shore, plus 20 per boat tier. A Galleon (tier 5) counts as 100 tiles out even when it sits right by the shore.

Any fish with a min. distance above about 10 needs a boat, and so does every legendary fish.

Bite conditions

Conditions change two things: which fish bites and how fast bites come.

Season

Many fish have seasons, shown in the fish lists:

  • Best season: ×1.6 chance
  • In season: normal chance
  • Out of season: ×0.35 chance, but they still bite
  • Legendary fish never bite out of season.
  • Fish listed as “All year” ignore seasons.

Time of day

Most fish bite only at certain times: Dawn, Day, Dusk, or Night. Dawn and dusk also give +1 bite speed, or +2 when it’s cloudy, overcast, drizzling, or raining. During the day, bright clear weather and heat haze give −1.

Weather

Fish are split into predators (aggressive, surging, and erratic fighters) and surface feeders (passive and steady fighters). In this table, “rare” covers Rare, Epic, and Legendary fish.

WeatherEffect on which fish biteBite speed
Clear—0
CloudyPredators ×1.2, surface feeders ×1.1+1
OvercastPredators ×1.3, surface feeders ×1.2+1
DrizzleSurface feeders ×1.3+1
RainEverything ×1.15, surface feeders ×1.4+2
Heavy rainPredators ×1.5+1
ThunderstormPredators ×1.7, rare ×1.6, common ×0.5+1

SnowEverything ×0.7−2
BlizzardEverything ×0.45−3
Heat hazeEverything ×0.6−2
SandstormEverything ×0.45−3
Ash fallRare ×1.3, common ×0.7−1

Thunderstorms and fog are the best weather for rare fish. In a thunderstorm, a legendary predator gets ×2.7 from the weather alone.

Moon

The moon has 8 phases and moves one phase each day. Every day gets a fishing rating that combines the moon phase with a slower 3-day cycle:

  • Prime: +2 bite speed, rare fish ×1.25
  • Good: +1 bite speed, rare fish ×1.1
  • Fair / Slow: no bonus

New Moon and Full Moon days are the best and the most likely to be prime. First Quarter and Last Quarter days never rate higher than fair.

Boiling water (hotspots)

  • The water is divided into 6×6-tile squares. At any time, about 1 in 5 of them is a hotspot, shown as water “boiling with baitfish”.
  • Hotspots move every 140 turns.
  • A hotspot gives +2 bite speed and makes small schooling fish ×2.2 more likely.
  • Hotspots don’t help with rare fish, apart from three small ones: Garnet Darter, Gemscale Darter, and Lava Loach. Use them for quick, steady catches, not trophies.

Fished-out water

  • Each 12×12-tile area has its own fish stock, which starts at 100%.
  • Every catch takes away 15%, down to a floor of 15%. Stock grows back by 1% every 25 turns.
  • 90% or more (untouched): rare fish ×1.3.
  • Below 35% (“worked hard”): rare fish ×0.15 and −3 bite speed. A fresh spot gets there on your 5th catch.
  • Low stock also cuts every fish’s chance against non-fish catches, so you pull up more junk.

For rare fish, land one fish and then move at least 12 tiles. A single catch is enough to lose the untouched bonus, and the spot needs about 125 turns to recover.

Stacking bonuses

Season, weather, moon, and untouched-water bonuses multiply together, up to a cap of ×4. Anything past that has no effect.

Fishing skill

Fishing skill goes from level 0 to 14. Each level needs this much total XP:

  • Level 0: 0 XP (Novice)
  • Level 1: 15 XP
  • Level 2: 40 XP
  • Level 3: 80 XP
  • Level 4: 140 XP
  • Level 5: 220 XP (Line-Wise)
  • Level 6: 320 XP
  • Level 7: 440 XP
  • Level 8: 580 XP
  • Level 9: 740 XP
  • Level 10: 920 XP (Deep-Water Hand)
  • Level 11: 1120 XP
  • Level 12: 1340 XP
  • Level 13: 1580 XP
  • Level 14: 1840 XP (Old Hand)
  • Line-Wise (level 5): +1 turn to reel in a fish (16 in total).
  • Deep-Water Hand (level 10): +2 turns (17 in total).
  • Each level adds 0.3 progress to every reeling move, makes Pull add 0.1 less tension, and makes Slack remove 0.1 more.

XP: casting gives 1 XP, and so does getting a bite. Landing a fish gives more, and harder fish give more still. A fish that escapes still gives a little.

Catching the same species again and again gives less XP: half after 5 catches of that species, and a quarter after 15. To level up fast, catch many different species.

Legendary fish

There are 9 legendary fish. All of them need deep water (Leviathan’s Shadow needs open sea, and Dawnbreaker Trout also bites in shallows), plus a boat to get far enough from shore.

Bite odds

These odds show how often a fish bite turns out to be the legendary one, with non-fish catches left out. They assume every condition is met, a Legendary Lure, and untouched water.

FishClear weather, normal moonFog or thunderstorm + prime moon
Old Whiskerking1 in 51 in 2.5
Moonrise Phantom1 in 41 in 2.5
Dawnbreaker Trout1 in 51 in 4
The Golden One1 in 41 in 3

Bogmother1 in 61 in 5
Stonefin Elder1 in 6.51 in 3.5
The Vein Wyrm1 in 91 in 5.5
Leviathan’s Shadow1 in 51 in 3.5

With a matching lure other than the Legendary Lure, the odds drop sharply. For The Golden One: Glowbait about 1 in 6, Spinner 1 in 11, Fly 1 in 18, Worm 1 in 80.

How to catch one

  1. Buy the Legendary Lure from the chandler in a tier 5 town (110 gold).
  2. Get a boat that is big enough: boat tier × 20, plus your distance from shore, must reach the fish’s min. distance.
  3. Check the season, then head out at the right time of day. Fog, thunderstorms, and New or Full Moon days help a lot.
  4. Fish in untouched water. After each catch, move at least 12 tiles before you cast again.
  5. Reel in with the cheat sheet. Level 5 or higher and a good rod make a huge difference (see Reeling).
