The latest Derail Valley update introduces a new feature that lets you customize your trains with private locomotives and unique demonstrators. These pre-production locomotives, known as demonstrators, are scattered in wrecked conditions throughout the game, often hidden at stations. Owned by the Derail Valley Railway Museum, they can be acquired by purchasing a museum license for $15,000. Once restored, these locomotives function as work trains that can be summoned through the comms radio. They are permanent additions to your fleet, though they require manual servicing and are not covered by DVRT insurance.
Restoring a demonstrator involves several steps: locate and re-rail the locomotive, tow it to the museum’s roundhouse, order any missing parts from the museum’s office, transport the parts to the museum using a utility vehicle, install the parts, carry out basic repairs and refueling, and optionally give it a fresh paint job.
Parts for restoration can be ordered once you reach step three of the process. These parts are delivered to the museum’s loading track and need to be transported to the locomotive using a utility vehicle and the cargo transfer machine.
Each demonstrator offers four unique paint options: Primer, Abandoned Demo, New Demo, and New DVRT. Painting becomes available after completing step seven of the restoration. Using a sprayer gun and paint cans (sold separately at the museum’s paint station), you can customize both the body and cab independently. However, repaired locomotives that were previously exploded will lose any applied paint jobs.
