CELESTAY: Lures, Fish, and Records Guide

Lures

LureHow to get itWhat it is for
FishhookYou start the game with it.Nothing requires it. It is the weakest lure.
WoodenFishing shop for 15. Available from the start. No fish needs it exclusively. For Idle Fishing or Skill Fishing: Perfect!, it is the best way to catch the fish that only the Wooden and Good lures can land: Rustfeeder, Mimic Surgeonfish, Foxface, Venustus, Barracuda, Crack Serpent, Ocean sunfish, Yellowtail snapper, Bluefin trevally, Redtoothed triggerfish.
GoodFishing shop for 100. Unlocks at building height 35.The only lure for 8 fish: Wailrot, Flagfin angelfish, Humphead wrasse, Blue dragon, Lobster, Seahorse, Yellowfin tuna, Largehead hairtail. Most of them need Skill Fishing: Great!.
MagneticFishing shop for 50. Unlocks at building height 15.A salvage lure, used mostly for treasures (records and memories). Until you own the Last Lantern record, it makes that record almost certain at 17–100 m. Nothing is exclusive to it.
DreamThe Sentry gives it in his 4th dialogue, which appears once you own the Red gemstone ring. The only lure for the Oarfish (91–93 m) and the Salt Prayer record (88 m). It is also the top pick for many shallow and mid-depth fish with Idle Fishing or Skill Fishing: Perfect!.
QuietReward for the Fishing Maniac’s Oarfish quest. Once you catch the Oarfish, he comes back by boat. The only lure for the Sawshark, Echohearer, and Mahi-mahi. It is also the best choice for the Coelacanth, Footballfish, and Goblin shark.

The deep-sea lures unlock one after another:

  1. Get the Red gemstone ring. You need a building height of at least 40 and the Magnetic lure equipped. Depth does not matter. After that, the Sentry’s dialogue gives you the Dream lure.
  2. That dialogue brings the Fishing Maniac on his first visit. He gives you the quest “I’d like you to catch an oarfish…”
  3. Catch the Oarfish with the Dream lure. The Fishing Maniac returns and hands you the Quiet lure.

Best Lure and Depth for Each Fish

Idle Fishing and Skill Fishing: Perfect! are in one column because they both use the normal catch table. To get a Perfect!, stop the moving bobber on the tiny orange stripe in the fishing mini-game. It is the hardest spot to hit, but one hit finishes the catch on the spot.

The orange stripe does not show up on every cast. It appears more often the deeper you fish.

Skill Fishing: Great! means stopping the bobber inside the blue area. As you go deeper, the blue area shrinks and you need more hits in a row. At 100 m, a Great! takes 4 consecutive hits on the smallest blue area.

In the two method columns, each cell gives the lure and depth with the best odds. A dash (—) means that method cannot catch the fish.

Lures that can catch it includes every lure with any chance at the fish, across all depths and methods. Some of those chances are tiny, so a lure in this column is not always worth using. When only one lure is named, you must use it.
